Bike the Bridge

One of the best ways to get acquainted with San Francisco and surrounding areas is to bike the Golden Gate bridge to Sausalito and return by ferry.

About the Golden Gate Bridge

Few cities possess an icon that so distinctly pronounces, “I’m here.” New York has the Statue of Liberty, Sydney has its Opera House, but nothing makes you sigh “San Francisco” like the elegant profile of the stupendous Golden Gate Bridge, which links the city peninsula to the forests of Marin County.

About Sausalito

Sausalito is a city in Marin County, California, across the Golden Gate Strait from San Francisco. It’s known for its Richardson Bay houseboat enclaves, built by artist squatters after WWII. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Bay Model Visitor Center has a functioning 3D hydraulic model of the Bay Area, plus exhibits about the area's waterways. The Marin Headlands offers Golden Gate Bridge views.

Welcome Dinner at È Tutto Qua

Located in the heart of San Francisco's North Beach, È Tutto Qua is in a building with a lot of history. Originally built by Amadeo Giannini, founder of Bank of Italy which he later renamed Bank of America, you can still see his "BA" logo in the stonework above the door. Two story high arched windows surround the dining area, giving great views of the neighborhood and people watching from all angles. The upstairs mezzanine is often used for groups and parties. Our atmosphere is fun and friendly. We hope to make everyone feel welcome here.

About North Beach

North Beach, a buzzy neighborhood steeped in Italian heritage, draws locals and tourists to its checked-tablecloth trattorias, coffee shops and retro-flavored bars. The spirit of the Beat Generation can be felt at the storied City Lights bookstore and the memorabilia-filled Vesuvio Cafe bar. In Telegraph Hill the Filbert Steps offer a scenic hike to the iconic Coit Tower, with WPA-era murals and panoramic views.

Dropbox: Work better, safer, together.

Carmen Pop Chief of Staff - Global Channel

Strategic advisor and right hand to the Global Channel Chief at Dropbox, overseeing global sales and programs. Responsible for the global distribution partnership & strategy with Ingram Micro, focusing on accelerated growth and revenue.

Our story

We’ve always been obsessed with making work better for people.

Back in 2007, that meant designing a simpler way to keep files in sync. Today, it means designing a more enlightened way of working—on files, projects, and more.

Most “productivity tools” drain creative energy. They constantly ping, distract, and disrupt your team’s flow. And none of them connect, so you spend your days switching between apps, tracking down feedback. It’s busywork, not the meaningful stuff. We want to change this.

So we’re building a home for all your team’s work. A better way to stay in flow and bring your team’s best ideas to life. A set of tools that maximize inspiration and minimize distraction.

So you can focus on what matters.

Off the Grid Ventures: Introduction to Venture Capital

David Mes Founder & Managing Partner

David is a Founder and Managing Partner at Off The Grid Ventures, a pre-seed and seed stage venture capital firm. Off The Grid Ventures backs "off the grid entrepreneurs", i.e. women and foreign/immigrant entrepreneurs, in the B2B Tech and Fintech arenas. These entrepreneurs are underserved when it comes to early-stage funding, and yet the diversity of their teams lead them to reach great heights.

Prior to founding Off The Grid Ventures, David was a Managing Partner at Arc Venture Partners and a Senior Principal at Cipio Partners, both secondary direct venture capital firms. In these capacities, he led and managed investments in successful companies such as Airtight Networks, Broadbus (acquired by Motorola), Continuous Computing (acquired by Radisys), Danger (acquired by Microsoft), DisplayLink, Fortemedia, Impinj (NASDAQ: PI), Polychromix (acquired by Thermo Fisher Scientific), PSS Systems (acquired by IBM), Tropos Networks (acquired by ABB), Verimatrix, and Voltage Security (acquired by Hewlett Packard).

Previously, David was an investment manager at the NESBIC CTE Fund, a pan-European early-stage venture capital firm where he notably led the firm’s investments in Outsystems and Oxxio (acquired by Centrica). Before becoming a venture capitalist, David started his career as an investment banker for Lehman Brothers in London and Banque Paribas in Sao Paulo.

David holds an MBA from Wharton, a Masters in Applied Economics from the IEP de Paris, a BA in Business Law from Sorbonne University and a BA in Political Sciences from the IEP de Paris.

Overview

Off The Grid Ventures was created with a simple goal in mind: helping "off the grid" entrepreneurs - i.e. foreign and women founders - succeed in the early stages. These entrepreneurs are typically under-funded by traditional investors at the outset yet are as if not more likely to be successful.

We focus our investments where we can help the most - i.e. starting at the pre-seed and seed stages in the Enterprise Tech and Fintech arenas. We are "active investors”, accelerating and enhancing the success of our companies thanks to our extensive Tech/VC networks and experiences.

Arjanna van der Plas Thought Leadership Writer OpenIDEO

Coaching has always been part of my professional life, both in group settings and individuals. In the past 10 years, I’ve coached many consultants and researchers, as well as startup teams and students. I’m trained as a co-active coach by CTI, the largest in-person coach training school in the world. Moreover, I’m a yoga and meditation teacher (Yoga Tree, RYT200), which inspires me to incorporate mindfulness and somatic exercises in my coaching practice.

I intentionally combine my work as a coach with social impact related projects with among others OpenIDEO and Stories Behind The Fog so that my coaching is grounded in practical experience.

In my social impact work I'm known to be an engaged, energetic and entrepreneurial innovator with a double degree in Science Communication (MSc/Drs) and Industrial Design Engineering (MSc/Ir). I'm all-round, effective and organized, and keen on connecting people and ideas and making things happen rather than talking about them. I'm experienced in starting up and leading projects, organizing and moderating events and creative speaking and writing. I love to work on projects that are relevant for society, in multidisciplinary teams with a concrete mission.

Anke Huiskes Director Sales & Trade Marketing Willow

Anke Huiskes has a deep passion for how new technology can improve people’s lives, especially around women’s health. She began her career in the Netherlands by starting her first company at age 22 and sold it after two years to join Procter & Gamble to learn all the ins and outs of sales and marketing in a retail environment. Five years ago, she moved to San Francisco to say goodbye to the corporate life and join some (early stage) startups. She currently works at Willow, a platform of products to improve women’s health, where she is leading the sales and trade marketing. Anke has a Masters Degree (Cum Laude) and lives with her husband and 2-year-old son in San Francisco.

Overview

Willow is a platform for products that help improve the lives and health of women. We are a mission-driven team of experienced inventors, young mothers, and fathers dedicated to making a difference in women’s lives.

The Willow® Wearable Breast Pump is the first solution in our platform. Moms who pump told us that they often need to press pause on life while they pump and that their dream pump would be truly mobile and unplugged from the wall. We set out to create a better solution and we did not stop innovating until we got there. Willow is a complete re-imagining of the breast pump - it is the only all-in-one breast pump that fits in a bra. Willow is mobile, discreet and gives moms their hands back. Willow cuts the cords and banishes dangling baby bottles so busy multi-tasking moms can pump wherever the day takes them. Willow is a whole new pumping experience and it is going to change the game for women everywhere.

Y Combinator

Kat Mañalac Partner

Kat Manalac is a Partner at Y Combinator where she participates in choosing and funding nearly 300 companies every year. Kat is specifically focused on outreach — reaching out to communities of potential founders, and helping find the next Airbnb. Previously, she was Chief of Staff to Alexis Ohanian, investors and co-founder of reddit. Prior to that, Kat was at WIRED Magazine. Kat has a BS in Communications from Northwestern University.

Y Combinator created a new model for funding early stage startups.

Twice a year we invest a small amount of money ($150k) in a large number of startups.

The startups move to Silicon Valley for 3 months, during which we work intensively with them to get the company into the best possible shape and refine their pitch to investors. Each cycle culminates in Demo Day, when the startups present their companies to a carefully selected, invite-only audience.

But YC doesn’t end on Demo Day. We and the YC alumni network continue to help founders for the life of their company, and beyond.
