San Francisco, get ready to wake up and dance! - Daybreaker

🌸🎶 SPRING FLING 🎶🌼

On Saturday, May 18th, let’s celebrate spring in full bloom. May marks Mental Health Awareness Month and this is our season to blossom and bloom — so go ahead and let your petals down to soak in all that summer life has to offer.

The World Health Organization says mental illness affects 1 in 4 people worldwide.

But research suggests that the special combo of:

🎧 enjoying music,

👯 moving our bodies with the rhythm,

💛and synchronizing said moves with those around us…

aka a DANCE PARTY — uniquely benefits health and happiness.

We call this formula the Daybreaker D.O.S.E. AND we were just published in Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center last month! Check it out here.

Wear florals and green 🌺💚 (official color of mental health month!) — and let’s release our D.O.S.E.

See you on the dance floor. Get tickets

Y Combinator

Eric Migicovsky Partner Y Combinator

Eric is a Partner at YC. He founded Pebble Technology (YC W11), which was acquired by Fitbit in 2016. While studying engineering at the University of Waterloo in 2008, Eric began building smartwatches with a group of friends. In April 2012, Eric and his team launched Pebble on Kickstarter, where it became the most successful crowdfunded project in Kickstarter’s history. Pebble sold over 2,000,000 watches.

Y Combinator created a new model for funding early stage startups.

Twice a year we invest a small amount of money ($150k) in a large number of startups.

The startups move to Silicon Valley for 3 months, during which we work intensively with them to get the company into the best possible shape and refine their pitch to investors. Each cycle culminates in Demo Day, when the startups present their companies to a carefully selected, invite-only audience.

But YC doesn’t end on Demo Day. We and the YC alumni network continue to help founders for the life of their company, and beyond.

Thumbtack – Start a project

Servaes Tholen COO & CFO

Servaes Tholen is the Chief Financial Officer & Chief Operating Officer at Thumbtack. In this role, he is responsible for the finance, accounting and operations teams. Servaes came to Thumbtack from Elance-oDesk (now Upwork) where he served as CFO and led the finance, accounting, analytics, data science and human resources teams. Servaes earned a Master of Science in Applied Physics from the Delft University of Technology and a Master of Business Administration from INSEAD with a finance specialization. Servaes and his family reside in the San Francisco Bay Area. His personal favorite Thumbtack project completed was hiring a DJ and roulette host for a fundraising event.

This is our story.

Back in 2008, we asked ourselves a simple question that would later become our mission: Why is it still so hard to hire a plumber? Or a piano teacher? Or any local professional?

In the era of instant-everything, it’s crazy that you still have to waste an entire afternoon researching, calling and comparing local pros whenever you need one. So we set out to make it easier. Today, millions of customers use Thumbtack technology to find and hire small businesses across the country.

NASA Ames Research Center: we're NASA's center in Silicon Valley

Peter Zaal Senior Research Engineer, Human Systems Integration Division

Laurent Wilkens Machine Learning Intern
Applying deep learning models in automating the search for exoplanets using photometric data of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS).

Mission and Goals

Humans are arguably the most critical element in the safety, reliability, and performance of complex systems. Our highly adaptive problem-solving capabilities create resilient operations across aerospace applications, especially with the advent of increasingly intelligent software and hardware systems. Advances in machine learning, adaptive automation, advanced display technologies, and information accessibility create new challenges for human performance and new opportunities for human-automation teaming.

In aeronautics, humans are the backbone of a national aviation system that must handle growing consumer demands. In space, long-duration exploration missions will require revolutionary changes in the roles of the astronauts and mission controllers to support autonomous operations. For both aeronautics and space, the design of hardware and software systems must address the need for safe, efficient and cost-effective operations, both in-flight and on the ground.

The Human Systems Integration Division is creating and applying a new understanding of how individuals and teams assimilate and act on information in pursuit of goals critical to the success of NASA missions.

Mission Statement

The Human Systems Integration Division enables the development of complex aerospace systems through analysis and modeling of human performance and human-automation interactions.

Ames Research Center Overview

NASA's Ames Research Center, one of ten NASA field centers, is located in the heart of California's Silicon Valley. Since 1939, Ames has led NASA in conducting world-class research and development in aeronautics, exploration technology and science aligned with the center's core capabilities.

Welcome Dinner at È Tutto Qua

Located in the heart of San Francisco's North Beach, È Tutto Qua is in a building with a lot of history. Originally built by Amadeo Giannini, founder of Bank of Italy which he later renamed Bank of America, you can still see his "BA" logo in the stonework above the door. Two story high arched windows surround the dining area, giving great views of the neighborhood and people watching from all angles. The upstairs mezzanine is often used for groups and parties. Our atmosphere is fun and friendly. We hope to make everyone feel welcome here.

About North Beach

North Beach, a buzzy neighborhood steeped in Italian heritage, draws locals and tourists to its checked-tablecloth trattorias, coffee shops and retro-flavored bars. The spirit of the Beat Generation can be felt at the storied City Lights bookstore and the memorabilia-filled Vesuvio Cafe bar. In Telegraph Hill the Filbert Steps offer a scenic hike to the iconic Coit Tower, with WPA-era murals and panoramic views.
